Free — the federal record. Every manufacturer selling in the United States is required to file how each vehicle was built with NHTSA's Vehicle Product Information Catalog (vPIC). It is public record, so decoding it costs nothing. This tool reads it directly.

Paid — the compiled history. Nobody is required to file what happened after the sale. Crash reports sit with insurers, title brands with each state's DMV, service records with whoever did the work. A paid report costs money because someone had to gather all of that and keep it current. A dealer management system like DealerCenter bundles it for licensed Dealers, or AutoManager for the marketing side.

How a VIN is built

A VIN — a Vehicle Identification Number — is seventeen characters, each assigned a job by federal regulation. Open what you need.

An O is always a zero
A VIN never contains the letters I, O or Q. They were left out so nobody confuses them with 1 and 0. If you are reading a VIN off a windshield plate and think you see an O, it is a zero.

2Position 9 tells you whether a VIN is realThe check digit, and how it catches a typo

The ninth character is not information about the vehicle. It is a number calculated from the other sixteen, which is why a mistyped VIN can be caught before you look anything up.

“Add the resulting products and divide the total by 11. The numerical remainder is the check digit… If the remainder is 10, the letter ‘X’ shall be used to designate the check digit.”

Each letter is converted to a number, each position is multiplied by an assigned weight, the products are added, and the total is divided by 11. What is left over has to match the character in position 9.

Position 9 catches the typo
The decoder runs this on your device as you type, before it contacts any database. A valid check digit proves the seventeen characters are consistent — it does not prove a vehicle was built with that number.

Because the codes repeat, the seventh character settles which half of the cycle you are in — but the regulation names exactly which vehicles that applies to.

“For passenger cars, and for multipurpose passenger vehicles and trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating of 4536 kg (10,000 lb) or less, if position 7 is numeric, the Model Year in position 10 of the VIN refers to a year in the range 1980-2009. If position 7 is alphabetic, the Model Year in Position 10 of the VIN refers to a year in the range 2010-2039.”

Cars and light trucks only
A motorcycle, a trailer, a bus or a heavy truck sits outside that sentence, so position 7 does not settle the year on those. Decode the VIN instead of reading the character.

4Why no chart can decode positions 4 through 8Each manufacturer fills these in itself

Federal regulation assigns the section but lets each manufacturer decide what goes in it. A Ford F-150’s engine code sits in a different position than a Toyota Camry’s, and both are correct. That is why decoding charts copied around the internet get VINs wrong.

This decoder reads those five characters through the manufacturer’s own registration with NHTSA rather than a chart.

Check two, not one
A Dealer taking a vehicle in should read the windshield plate and the title and confirm they match. A mismatch is the first sign of a problem worth stopping for.

6Common questionsWhy the decoder says what it says

Why doesn’t a VIN contain I, O or Q?
They were left out of the standard so nobody confuses them with the numbers 1 and 0. If you think you see an O, it is a zero.

Why does the decoder name a different company than my badge?
NHTSA records two separate things: the make and the manufacturer. A Lexus VIN starts with a code assigned to Lexus, and the manufacturer behind it is listed as Toyota Motor Corporation. Same for Acura and Honda, Lincoln and Ford, Cadillac and General Motors. Your badge is not wrong and neither is the record — they are answering different questions. Why doesn’t it show my trim, options or packages?
Manufacturers report the build to NHTSA for safety compliance — engine, body, restraints. They do not report the window sticker. A build sheet or a paid data service is the only place options live.

Why doesn’t it use my engine’s marketing name?
Manufacturers give engine families their own names, and none of them file those names with the government. The federal record uses engineering terms — displacement, cylinder count, power. The specifications are all there; the brand name for them is not. Each brand page explains which name that brand uses.

Can I decode a VIN from before 1981?
No, and neither can anyone else reliably. The 17-character format only became standard for the 1981 model year. Before that each manufacturer used its own scheme. For a classic, the marque registry or an owner club is the real source.

Is this the same data the government uses?
Yes. It reads the NHTSA vPIC database directly — the same catalog behind the government’s own decoder.

Does a valid check digit mean the vehicle is real?
No. It means the seventeen characters are internally consistent. It does not prove a vehicle was ever built with that number, and it says nothing about the title. Always read the physical plate.
