Frequently Asked Questions
Are Dealer 101 Certificates accepted by the DMV for my License Renewal or to become a Dealer?
Yes, we are a California DMV Approved Provider, #CCC0052.
Our Courses meet the DMV’s requirements for Dealers (Wholesale or Retail) renewing their Licenses. We are also approved to provide the DMV required training for individuals applying for their Dealer License for the 1st time.
Each Certificate is provided to us by the DMV and has a unique serial number for every Dealer completing the program.
How much does it cost to become a Car Dealer and get my Dealer License?
The cost to open a Dealership for the 1st time can vary but you can also save a great amount of money with a license.
A retail license is typically less than $1,000 per year and Wholesale is less than $500 per year. This includes our training class.
Licensed dealers can drive all of their vehicles for personal use and pay no registration or sales tax.
The DMV Approved Dealer license course covers everything in great detail.
1) DMV Application
- $175 Application fee (inc. Family Support fee)
- $90 for automobile dealer license plate (optional)
- $90 for motorcycle dealer license plate (optional)
- $100 Autobroker Endorsement (optional)
2) A Dealer Bond
- Wholesale Dealers – $100 per year
- Retail Dealers – $500+ per year (this one varies by credit)
3) A DMV-Approved Location
- Wholesale-only Dealers working from a home office
- Retail Dealers working from a very basic office with one parking spot (we help with low-cost locations in the training)
Can I take the course on my mobile phone?
Yes. We developed all Dealer 101 courses to automatically adapt fit the any screen your are using for a great learning experience.
You can start and continue your course using a mix of devices and we’ll keep track of your progress!
What is a "Broker License" and what can I do with it?
There is no such thing as a “Broker License”.
Retail dealers can obtain a “Broker Endorsement” that allows them to sell vehicles they currently don’t have in their inventory. For example, they would contact other dealers on behalf of a consumer looking for a specific vehicle.
Note: At one time Wholesale Dealers could obtain a Broker Endorsement. This is no longer allowed by the DMV and new Legislation is pending.
How long does it take to finish the DMV LICENSE RENEWAL course?
How long does it take to finish the NEW DEALER course?
The DMV requires New Dealers to take one DMV approved class. The required training is here on the Dealer 101 website. It is a Self-Paced training with videos, notes, and practice questions. It is not timed and you cannot fail. Your progress is automatically saved so you can log out and carry on anytime in the future.
Can I get help while I'm learning?
Yes. We are Online and available for support during business hours and most weekends. We can also be reached by phone or text at (619) 333-0701 or email at contact@dealer101.com
What if I don't pass the test?
You can’t fail. Our Course allows you to revisit each Lesson and Quiz as many times as you’d like – until you pass.
We believe it’s more important to have you learn at your own pace, on your own time.
Why don't you charge for the Renewal Course when I first get started?
We’re so confident that Dealers will love (and successfully finish) the Dealer 101 license renewal course that we took away the risk our 1st-time customers had when choosing their DMV training provider.
How long do I have to wait for my Certificate?
Overnight, FedEx orders are available when you check-out, after completing the course.
